Piche's Rallies
in the 6th to defeat V.F.W.
Piche's
staged a 5-run comeback in the bottom of the 6th to defeat V.F.W. 10-9 in
recent Belmont Little League action.
Piche's
started the 1st strong with a solo home run off the bat of Joey Levesque (his
2nd of the season). The score remained close through the first 3 frames,
with V.F.W. capitalizing on some untimely Piche's errors making the score 3-2
after three. The 4th proved to be V.F.W.'s big inning, with a string of
singles by Ryan Bergman, Matt Fogarty and Garret Gilbert (3-4 on the
day) combined with two walks leading to a 5-spot on the board and an 8-2
lead for the visitors. Gilbert, who started on the mound for V.F.W.,
pitched a strong 4 1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts before allowing a single to
Jonny LeClair and a triple to Levesque in the 5th, as Piche's inched back
within three. A lead-off single in the top of the 6th by Gilbert led to
an insurance run for V.F.W., making the score 9-5 going into the final frame.
After lead off walks by Jared Ess, Casey Abbott and Brian Weeks in the bottom
of the 6th, Corey Derosier slapped a single to right, followed by a double by
Levesque that knotted the score at 9-9. A fly ball by Piche's
starting hurler Caleb Drouin to shallow right was fielded by Nick Drouin,
but proved to be deep enough to allow Levesque to tag up at 3rd and cross the
plate with the winning run for Piche's, who improved their record to 3-0 while
V.F.W. notched their first loss of the season (2-1)
